favour for the nations

random thoughts…

when jesus read from isaiah at nazareth, he actually merged two different passages…

isaiah 61:  the spirit of the lord is upon me. this passage is in a context of god’s blessing for zion, for restoration of jerusalem

isaiah 42:  open blind eyes, set the prisoners free.  this passage is in a context of god’s blessings for the nations, the ‘goyim’, the gentiles.  (in fact this passage is not kind to the israelites… my people are blind & deaf!)

so, notice how jesus blends the two together. the spirit of adonai elohim is upon me BECAUSE… i will proclaim good news for zion AND for the gentiles.  good news for my people AND good news for the nations.

so, long story short, jesus gives two examples, both about gentiles, the people are not happy, lets get him, you know the story…

why is this relevant now?  i believe we, his people, are in the same rut.  we want god to do audacious things for us, his chosen people.  but for the nations… do we really expect god to bless the nations?

DO WE REALLY HAVE ANY IDEA OF THE ENORMITY OF GODS FAVOUR FOR THE NATIONS?
